Support GCC 14 and later

GCC 14 turned `-Wimplicit-function-declaration`, `-Wint-conversion` and
`-Wincompatible-pointer-types` into errors.

Two of the three fixes were real bugs – missing declarations that caused
incorrect types to be used, that worked by chance.`
