Concerning directedness using the underlying directlion, that should still be a possibility, and then it should be extended with settings to also use superficial. Note that gammaloop uses underlying for momentum, and therefore needs these to wokr on the underlying how does the current rendering api look like? And what is the *display* method doing currently?
